Liam Finn single

7th December 2008

I look the other way for a second, and see what I miss...? Liam Finn's single "Better To Be" came out on 10th November, and the B-side is from our recording at Cargo. It's a vicious, screaming jam of a mix and exactly what B-sides were meant for. It's like the golden age of singles all over again. Available as a very limited edition 7" vinyl... or on iTunes.

News bites

7th November 2008

The Orange UnsignedAct TV shows to date only have time to show short clips of the band performances, but you can check out whole songs online on the Orange UnsignedAct website. I particularly enjoyed re-living songs by Bo Bruce, Minnikin, and the deranged folk stylings of Kids Of Horses. Other personal favourites to look out for in show two include Kubla Khan, Luva Ana and Whiskey Cats.

The CD version of Eartha Kitt Live at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival received a glowing review in the Sunday Times. A DVD of the same show was also released last week.

And finally, I've been road-testing our new, cost-effective portable system. It's been out on video jobs at IndigO2 and Dingwalls, and was used to record an interview with a music superstar in a tiny London hotel room. Small (and light) is beautiful!

Orange UnsignedAct hits screens this week

28th October 2008

Once again, a heap of unsigned artists are chasing an album deal with A&M, and you get to see it all happen on your TV. The 7,000-odd bands and singer-songwriters that entered Orange UnsignedAct were whittled down to around 60 finalists by online voting, and we've since recorded those finalists performing at audition gigs in London and Leeds.

The show is hosted once again by Alex Zane. On the judging panel are Blur's Alex James, Simon Gavin of A&M Records, and walking music encyclopedia Lauren Laverne.

The series starts on 4Music this Thursday 30th October at 9pm, and is shown again at 12.40 the following sunday on Channel 4. Live performances recorded and mixed by LX3.

One Night Of Queen - video online now

23rd August 2008

We recently recorded One Night Of Queen, the most astonishing Queen tribute you're ever likely to hear. Filmed in high definition at the Brighton Centre earlier this summer, with audio recorded and mixed by LX3.

A 12-minute highlights reel is online at www.zproductions.biz/onoq.html.

Doing a rough mix live for video was quite a surreal experience... With no sight of the stage, there was very little to indicate that I wasn't actually mixing Freddie and Queen themselves. Fair brought a tear to my eye.

Transgressive Hot Summer Tour

30th July 2008

In the middle of our busiest month ever, we were pleased to be asked to record the London date on the Transgressive summer tour. It was something of a mini-festival, featuring Liam Finn, Jeremy Warmsley, Esser, Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man and So So Modern.

We split our rig to cover the two rooms at the Cross Kings, creating two separate 24-track systems comprising mic splitter, preamps, and main and safety recorders, with a two-man crew taking care of each stage. A bunch of our mics and other equipment were used to supplement the venue's gear. In light of the pandemonium, it was encouraging to find that we'd made it back to base with all our kit present, correct, and (in spite of Esser's dancing skeleton) in one piece.

Where this recording might show up is anyone's guess. The gigs were shot on video as well, so a future edition of Rockfeedback perhaps?
